In Washington, a State Department spokesman confirmed the meeting occurred but said "beyond that we aren't going to read out any details of the conversation".

Ankara believes YPG fighters are linked with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) separatists inside Turkey, responsible for waging armed campaign since 1984 causing death to more than 40,000 people.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that relations with the United States were harmed by Washington's refusal to extradite cleric Fetullah Gulen and its provision of arms to the Kurdish militant YPG.

Russian Federation and Iran have backed Syrian regime while Turkey has supported its foes, but, despite the differences, they struck a deal in 2017 to set up de-escalation zones in Syria, helping reduce fighting.

Wednesday's move was not the first time Turkey has announced its displeasure with the U.S. about the issue.

In October, the YPG and their allies announced the capture of ISIL's self-declared capital of Raqqa in Syria after a four-month operation.

Russia's ambassador to Ankara, Alexei Yerkhov and Iranian ambassador Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian Fard were called in to express Turkey's discontent over the continuing attacks in Idlib.

It will be remembered that most of the opposition forces have been relocated to Idlib after being forced to withdraw from other parts of the country.

Cavusoglu emphasised that in efforts to bring peace to Syria, Russia and Iran were the "guarantors" of the regime side and Turkey of the opposition.

Turkey has been complaining about the attacks undertaken by Damascus forces in Idlib region.

"Iran and Russian Federation need to carry out their responsibilities".

However, Syrian regime forces, with Russian backing have stepped up attacks trying to regain control of the area controlled by the rebels.
