Bracamontes (pronounced Braa-kamont-eez) was described by a defense-appointed psychiatrist during an examination into his mental fitness to stand trial as suffering from a delusional disorder characterized by "grandiose" and "bizarre" thoughts.

He is also accused of shooting a driver in the head to steal his vehicle and wounding another deputy. Only jurors hearing Bracamontes' case were in court at the time of his comments.
