Day was speaking on the eve of the storied Pebble Beach Pro-Am, an event that was nearly withering on the vine a few years ago, but which begins on Thursday with a field that includes the world's three top-ranked players and several former number ones.

Recent Australian victor Cameron Davis (73, Pebble Beach) and Stuart Appleby (73, Spyglass) are one over, while Sydney native Matt Jones (74, Pebble Beach) is two over. McIlroy finally got in on his fifth putt, carding a double bogey.

"I was just sort of ready to call it quits for the year after the Dunhill", said McIlroy, who has marked his return to competitive action with third and second place finishes at the Abu Dhabi Championship and Dubai Desert Classic respectively.

McIlroy is competing in the pro-am event with his father Gerry and will have four-time Pebble Beach victor Phil Mickelson for company over the next three days at Spyglass Hill, Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Pebble Beach.

Eastwood is an avid golfer with a 22.7 handicap, and is the captain of a 4-person team as they take on Bill Murray and his celeb squad of hackers. If that doesn't get your golf-watching juices flowing a little bit, then it might be time to take up a different sport.

"I need to go and try and win every single event, because who knows what's going to happen around the corner".

Former Oregon star Aaron Wise was among the final players on the course at Monterey and had a chance to pull even with the leaders, but he managed only a par on his final hole of the day.

"He's pretty amusing - he should be a comedian", she said about playing with Murray.

As Rory said, "Yeah, Gerry McIlroy post-50 is pretty good".
