UFC 211 was rumored to be headlined by a Middleweight title unification bout between Undisputed Champion Georges St. Pierre and Interim Champion Robert Whittaker, health issues have rendered both of them unable to compete.

Romero vs. Rockhold, presented by AirAsia, kicked into high gear as athletes from the main and co-main events warmed up with an open workout session at Elizabeth Quay, Perth, ahead of this Sundays pay-per-view event. The event was capped by a last-minute interim title fight between Luke Rockhold, originally scheduled to face middleweight champ Robert Whittaker, and Yoel Romero.

After missing weight by three pounds, Romero was deemed ineligible to claim the interim middleweight belt that was on the line.

Following tonight's fight, UFC President Dana White went on to confirm that Romero would get his chance in the Octagon against Whittaker again in a rematch of the two men's fight of last July in which Romero suffered a loss by unanimous decision. The 40-year-old Romero, who won a gold medal in wrestling at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, stepped into the fight at short notice. "So there's a bit of time to figure out what's going to happen in the weight division". This was the first time in my career I could not get my body down.

The loss is a major setback to Hunt in his farewell tour in the UFC.

Australian heavyweight Tai Tuivasa unleashed a powerful barrage of punches to beat France's Cyril Asker by TKO in the first round, improving his record to 9-0. It was a very impressive submission, with Pedro guarding against multiple instances of Safarov trying to roll out. Rockhold appeared to have the upper hand when the fight-ending sequence occurred.
