PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games: Opening Ceremony Welcomes Slightly Warmer Weather But Winds Could

The 2018 games have barely started, and South Korean president Moon Jae-in has already made history just by shaking hands with Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo Jong.

In addition to marching under a unified Korean flag, the countries are set to join forces on the Olympic women's ice-hockey team, the first-ever Olympic team comprised of members representing both North and South Korea.

At the opening ceremonies Friday, Pence sat stone-faced in his seat as Moon and North Korean officials stood together with much of the stadium to applaud their joint team of athletes.

President Thomas Bach will visit North Korea after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as part of an agreement between the IOC and North and South Korea, a source within the Olympic movement told Reuters on Monday.

It's worth noting that Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier who died after being held captive in North Korea, met with Pence in PyeongChang earlier in the day.

At a VIP reception before the opening ceremony, Pence and Kim Yong Nam were in the same room, according to Jarrod Agen, his deputy chief of staff, but Pence "did not come across the North Korean delegation" at the event.

In an extraordinary moment that could hardly be fathomed one month ago, North and South Korea have entered the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium together. He insisted on Saturday that the U.S., South Korea and Japan were united in their goal of isolating North Korea over the country's nuclear weapons program.

Moon was invited to a summit with Kim, even as the United States warned against falling for Pyongyang's Olympic charm offensive. Otto had been in North Korea on an organized tour when he was arrested for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel.

Park also dryly pointed out that the last-minute participation of the North Koreans meant some South Korean athletes who had planned to play were ruled out, a fact some South Koreans continue to resent.

But US has distanced itself from the North Korean overtures.

Kim Yo Jong is probably Kim's closest confidant and is a senior cadre in North Korea's ruling party. Eager to differentiate, provincial authorities have since re-branded the South Korean ski resort as "PyeongChang", using an upper-case "C".

After being greeted at the airport by the head of South Korea's Unification Ministry, the delegation went from Seoul to the Olympic host city of Pyeongchang by high-speed train. "That is a very unusual time, if in fact he is trying to show a warming", Mattis said, referring to Kim Jong Un.

The live show was meant to be a pared down version of the feat, with 300 drones flying at the end of the opening ceremony, but that too was scrapped.

That said, these officials said that if the North Koreans had approached Pence with pleasantries, he would have responded in kind.
