Winter Olympics: White bags 100th gold for USA

Shaun White: Winter Olympics star calls in Tony Hawk's help for SHOCK switch at Tokyo 2020

Shaun White celebrates more than gold after mulling retirement

That forced White to up the ante.

"It was a poor choice of words to describe such a sensitive subject in the world today", White told NBC's "Today" show later. But the athlete then told Guthrie on Today, "I've grown as a person over the years and it's awesome - I mean, you've known me for a long time now - it's wonderful how life works and twists and turns and lessons learned".

He has been to the Olympics four times and has won gold medals twice during those worldwide competitions.

If you're like us, you're wondering how old is Olympic snowboarder Shaun White. He also now holds the US record for the most years between gold medals (12), topping Ted Ligety's previous record of eight.

The first attempt didn't go so well. When she took her "victory lap" run, she made a decision to got for it-nailing back-to-back 1080s, earning a score of 98.25.

James was also adamant his switch backside 1260 - arguably the most technical trick and one only he throws down - was being underscored.

That created a pressure situation for White on his third attempt.

The Olympic Games have followed the same pattern since women's hockey made its debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano. The United States men's hockey team looked to have a win wrapped up in their Olympic opener in Pyeongchang.

The score from the judges was a 97.75, enough to knock Hirano out of the top spot.

Gutman attempted to follow up, but White interrupted to say, "I feel like I addressed it".

"The spirit of competition helps me get my runs accomplished and gets me motivated and I'm just so thankful for today".

"The biggest improvement was getting right with myself, getting right with my mind-set and being inspired again, being excited being a snowboarder and just go to the mountain and take runs for fun, get back to those beginning reasons of why I did the sport in the first place".

"I am who I am and I'm proud of who I am and my friends love me and vouch for me". White found himself no longer inventing tricks so much as trying to master the pioneering acrobatics of others, including Hirano. "I had this insane injury in New Zealand where I busted my face open", he said. He has said that there were times when he questioned whether it was worth it to continue.

"Oh man, that was very bad and incredible at the same time". I knew I did a great ride and I was proud of that and I could walk away with my head high.

In another milestone, White's win was the 100th gold won by USA athletes in the Winter Games. Seventeen-year-old Red Gerard took home the gold in men's slopestyle, and Chloe Kim, also 17, dazzled with a dominant performance en route to the gold in the women's halfpipe.
