Benjamin Netanyahu Discredits Corruption Charges Against Him

Earlier Wednesday, Netanyahu slammed the police recommendations and said that the "outrageous" and "biased" cases against him are "unfounded". Netanyahu's attacks were made in response to remarks made by Police Commissioner Inspector-Generl Roni Alsheich, who hinted that Netanyahu had sent private investigators to collect information against police officers who are involved in his case.

After a 14-month-long investigation, police announced that it found enough evidence to recommend the state's prosecution to indict 68-year-old PM.

Netanyahu has been emphatic that he will not step down over the police recommendation to indict him, vowing that his government will serve out its full term, set to end in November 2019. The police accused Netanyahu of accepting almost Dollars 300,000 in gifts over 10 years.

Benjamin Netanyahu's lawyer, Amit Hadad, says police recommendations of corruption charges against the prime minister are based on "false" statements.

In the so-called Case 1000, in which Mr. Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are suspected of receiving illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors, Israeli-born Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian resort owner James Packer, the Indian Industrialist is also said to be a part of a project that Mr. Netanyahu tried to push forward to help Mr. Milchan. Police said they gathered sufficient evidence to start legal proceedings against the premier in two separate probes - Case 1000 and Case 2000.

Just as President Donald Trump overcame the media and left-wing establishment to win the USA election despite his bluster and personal baggage, so too is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defying the odds in Israel.

He added that the "prime minister never acted in Milchan's benefit on any issue, except for one, that of the visa". However, Israeli law does not require a leader to step down in the case of indictment.

He said past scandals had all "ended with nothing" and "this time as well they will end with nothing".

Education Minister Naftali Bennett said "taking gifts" as Netanyahu is alleged to have done was not up to the "standard" of a prime minister.

Eli Hazan, director of communications and worldwide relations for Israel's ruling Likud Party, said in an interview on Wednesday that the charges against Netanyahu are "absurd".

Almost all of Netanyahu's Cabinet ministers issued statements of support and his coalition partners all signalled they would stick by him, for now.

Culture Minister Miri Regev said the gifts Netanyahu received from American billionaire Arnon Milchan that were cited in the bribery charge were merely "relations between friends".
