Gold medal victor Ester Ledecka, of the Czech Republic, celebrates during the flower ceremony after the women's super-G at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Jeongseon, South Korea, Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018.

Vonn tore through the top half of the course, but with the finish line almost in sight, she struggled on one of her final turns, skiing off her line and very nearly losing her balance altogether.

The packed stands at the Jeongseon Alpine Center were already celebrating, convinced Anna Veith had defended her Olympic women's super-G title, when Ester Ledecka entered the starting gate and made history of her own on Saturday.

'I'm not fully healed, I really pushed it hard and there were some jumps and elements that I could not perform, but I forced myself to do so, said Hanyu, who damaged ankle ligaments in November.

On Friday night, Vonn said on her Twitter account: "I will give it everything I have with no regrets". I will leave it all out on the hill tomorrow and have no regrets.

"'Til today, I thought I am a better snowboarder", Ledecka said.

Veith looked destined to become the first woman to defend an Olympic super-G and was in celebratory mood at the end of her run.

Vonn has a chance to shake off her disappointment from the super-G on Wednesday, when she races in her best event, the downhill.

'Joyce is still a human being': Nationals dig in behind Barnaby
That provoked an angry response from Mr Joyce on Friday, who said the prime minister's remarks were "inept" and "unnecessary". The comments were seen as a thinly veiled call for the National Party leader to resign from the cabinet.

At 33, she is trying to become the oldest woman to win an Olympic Alpine medal.

Vonn said the outcome was "definitely shocking". According to Team USA, Vonn has won seven medals at the World Championships: 2 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronzes.

Weirather said that although Ledecka's triumph was "amazing", she had previously thought that the versatile Czech might one day present a challenge in Alpine skiing. She tied for sixth, 0.38 seconds behind the victor.

When she was asked about the people who have told her to specialize in either skiing or snowboarding, Ledecka replied that if she were pressured to choose one sport, she would choose another coach, instead. He liked to ski, and he started Alan Kildow down his ski-racing path.

But Vonn's blitz down the glistening super-G course at the Pyeongchang Olympics on Saturday ended in disappointment. Vonn overcame multiple injuries to make it to Pyeongchang this year and is ready to take on the competition.

"I just spent the last 20 minutes reading thru tweets directed at Lindsey Vonn". Her personal life has also played out in national news, as she went through a divorce, then a high-profile romance with golfer Tiger Woods. "I was probably the only snowboarder on site", she explained. "It's an Olympic medal and after my injury, I'm so happy that I'm in this situation, that I can ski fast".

Vonn is expected to compete in three events at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
