Gandhinagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party is now leading on 37 municipalities as the counting of votes for civic elections in Gujarat, began on Monday.

Rupani tweeted: "The result of Gujarat Municipality elections today is the people's referendum on development in the state". Congress won 16, NCP and BSP one each, and independents bagged four.

In auto hub Sanand, the BJP was able to bag 20 of 24 seats, while the Congress saw its seats reducing from eight last time to four. Earlier in the day, a tie was reported in Vanthali municipality in Junagadh district with both Congress and BJP winning 12 seats each. The numbers of votes of two district panchayats and 17 taluka panchayats are also counted. It won 27 out of 28 seats in seven wards.

The 75 municipalities are spread over 28 districts of the state. Congress had won the last elections their elected members defected to the BJP, and the saffron party took control. The villagers in 295 gram panchayats chose their "sarpanch" unanimously.

The BJP continued its winning performance in Gujarat by bagging 47 out of 75 municipalities today. The BJP won 99 seats of Gujarat Assembly out of 182 and Congress won 77 seats.

"This is a victory against the negative politics and programmes of the Congress", BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said. It is part of Unjha Assembly constituency which had gone to Congress in the 2017 election. Congress received a setback in Amerli district, the stronghold of leader of opposition in 14th Gujarat legislative assembly Paresh Dhanani.

After losing all three seats in the Rajasthan bypolls to Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have finally found its ground in Gujarat.
