Red Sox agree to deal with slugger JD Martinez

Though the Red Sox haven't made an official announcement on the J.D. Martinez signing, they have made room for him on the 40-man roster.

Martinez played outfield in Detroit and Arizona, but is expected to serve primarily as the DH for Boston.

Martinez joins Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts at the top of Boston's lineup. Rookie manager Alex Cora can stop worrying about the Ortiz-shaped hole in the middle of a lineup that produced the fewest homers in the American League last season.

The front-loaded deal is worth $110 million, with opt-out clauses after the second and third years, according to multiple reports. Rumors had Martinez looking for a 7-year, $200 million deal on the market, but with not biters this close to spring training, Martinez looks like he had to come down in price. He posted incredible numbers in just 62 regular-season games with the D-backs: 29 home runs (including a four-home-run game), 65 RBIs and a.302 batting average.

Tom Caron is a studio host for the Red Sox broadcast on NESN. Martinez is coming off a 2017 season in which he batted.303/.376/.690 (166 OPS+) with 45 home runs in 119 games for the Tigers and then Diamondbacks. Ramirez, meanwhile, appears destined to platoon at first base with veteran Mitch Moreland. And it comes courtesy of the Boston Red Sox. The 30-year-old outfielder was seeking a $100-million plus contract and he got it.

Martinez had a career year in 2017. "I think our approach previous year was lacking offensively and we had issues that the players have already talked about". Although, the Red Sox have not yet confirmed the deal. But with Bryce Harper, Josh Donaldson and Machado slated to head next winter's free-agent megaclass, most teams were less willing to spend money this time around. But the Red Sox, who have won the division in each of the last two seasons, will soon introduce a player with similar power. His reported signing gives the Red Sox an answer to the New York Yankees trade for Giancarlo Stanton and further re-ignites the best rivalry in sports.

But picking up Martinez should do a lot for risky Boston team that features young stars like Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers.
