FAAN Blames Heavy Rainfall as Dana Air Plane Overshoots Runway in Port Harcourt

"The aircraft, with the following details; 5N-SRI, Flight Number: 0348, Type: MD 83, souls: 54 including 05 crew landed at the Port Harcourt runway 21 and overran the runway at 1751 UTC".

A plane belonging to Dana Airlines overshot the Port Harcourt International Airport runway, skidding off into the bush, Sahara Reporters reports.

The passengers were subsequently evacuated by emergency officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

An aircraft is said to have overshot the runway when it moves past a specified point unintentionally, and this can be as a result of too much speed or that the plane is unable to stop.

He also said that AIB was informed of the incident immediately it occurred by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the airline.

Dana Air, while reacting to yesterday's incident, blamed it on bad weather influenced by torrential rain.

"An aircraft operated by Dana Airlines was involved in an accident yesterday, February 20, 2018 at the Port Harcourt International Airport".

According to information gathered, passengers on board the Dana aircraft were evacuated from a nearby bush in Omagwa neighborhood where the Port Harcourt International airport is located in Rivers state.

The airline commended the pilot for how he handled the issue, adding that all passengers and crew disembarked safely. "We also wish to applaud the Captain for exhibiting the highest safety standards and handling the situation professionally".
