Driver crashes into CT hospital, sets self on fire

The driver was airlifted to Bridgeport Hospital's burn unit in critical condition, reports CBS affiliate WFSB.

He is now in critical condition, Middletown Mayor Dan Drew told the news station. The man is reportedly in his 20s.

The Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad has responded, WFSB reported.

The hospital is in "emergency operations mode", hospital officials said. My goal in life is to one day write a Batman screenplay.

"All our patients are safe".

Drew said authorities believe the crash was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.

"The bomb squads were there".

The suspect has always been known to local authorities, with a criminal record going back several years.

He was convicted of driving under the influence, criminal mischief, and the most recent conviction was assault two years ago.

"We put the TV on and saw the accident at the hospital and then saw your vehicle drive by and said that's Carlos' house". In 2013, a jury found him guilty of attempted strangulation.

"I heard a noise", said Gary Mills, an eyewitness. "I found the volunteer coordinator and asked what was going on and she said that a vehicle had driven into the emergency room entrance and she just sent me home [because of the threat]". We went outside and we saw all the flames and then over this side I see this guy screaming, he was screaming!

Emergency patients at Middlesex were brought to MidState Medical Center, the Hospital of Central Connecticut and Hartford Hospital until for the time being.

"I was supposed to start my volunteering shift in the emergency room about 30 minutes after the incident", Solomon said.
