The close battle with the Boilermakers was symbolic to the Illini.
The win keeps the Boilermakers in contention for the 2-seed in the Big Ten Tournament, set to start on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
IL junior standout Alex Wittinger posted her third-straight double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds but it wasn't enough to help the Illini snap a 14-game losing streak. Te'Jon Lucas had another solid outing for IL with 12 points, while freshman Da'Monte Williams showed a little of what he can do on a nightly basis by scoring 11 points.
"We just happened to have the best guard in our league".
Williams came into the game shooting just 6 percent from beyond the arc, but made all three of his attempts on Thurdsday.
Purdue's Carsen Edwards scored a team-high 40 points in the win, hitting 11 of 19 shots from the field for a 57.9% field goal percentage.

Oscars 2018: Mary J Blige, Sufjan Stevens, Common and more to perform
The Oscars should be a spectacle: "fun and amusing and great performances", Todd told The New York Times on Thursday, Feb. 22. It was also the first time an Oscar was awarded to a Spanish-language song, so the performance will definitely be historic.
"We're gaining ground on it", coach Brad Underwood said of building the culture in his first season. "So that will go down as my best game in my playing career".
Purdue took advantage by making 11 of 23 3-pointers including four each by Edwards and Dakota Mathias.
So it was interesting to see one of Purdue's smallest players rip IL to shreds Thursday night at the State Farm Center.
"I know they might not have the best record, but those guys compete".
IL (13-17, 3-14 Big Ten) has won just once in its last seven games, but the Illini took some pride in not getting pushed around by the Boilermakers (25-5, 14-3). The tournament is being held a week earlier than usual because the Big East is holding its conference tournament at MSG the following week.
Sunday's game against Rutgers will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 2 p.m., and it will also be broadcast locally on WDAN-AM 1490 and WDNL-FM 102.1, as well as statewide on the 47-station Fighting Illini Sports Network.
