Karti Chidambaram in Tihar Jail till March 24

INX Media Case: Karti Chidambaram Sent to Judicial Custody Till March 24, Home-Food Demand Rejected

A Delhi court on Monday sent Karti Chidambaram to judicial custody till March 24 in the INX Media case, ANI reported.

Karti is accused of receiving kickbacks a decade back to clear foreign investment into INX Media group, using the influence of his father P. Chidambaram, who was then the Union finance minister.

"Hence, CBI is conducting an investigation into the case without the co-operation of the accused", CBI counsel VK Sharma said before the court of Special Judge Sunil Rana.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who has already served 12 days since February 28 in police custody, was produced before a special judge on expiry of his three-day police custody.

Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom during the hearing today.

Karti Chidambaram was produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday after his three-day CBI custody ended. He also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody.

"Only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in a separate prison", the court said.

In an interview with the "Today Show" about that suit , he said Daniels would be willing to return the money if she were to win. Daniels is ready to wire the money back by Friday in exchange for her ability to speak. .

Opposing the security application, the CBI argued that while there may be a threat to P Chidambaram, no threat lies to Karti or his family members, as they continue to travel around the country at free will. Organisation investigating me should be concerned about my security. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody.

The court allowed Karti's plea to carry spectacles and medicines, as per prescription subject to examination and approval by jail doctor, as per rules.

Although the Delhi High Court had granted Karti relief, by barring his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate till March 20, the barring of arrest was not applicable in the case of an arrest by the CBI.

Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan, appearing for Karti, pressed for hearing on he bail application today itself in case the court was considering sending him to judicial custody.

As per reports, the CBI had initially alleged that Karti received Rs 10 lakh as bribe for the FIPB clearance.

The application states that Indrani had told the CBI that she was willing to identify the place where she and Peter Mukerjea had met Karti in connection with the FIPB clearance for INX Media.
