Pic: Rex Features (Carragher has been a regular TV pundit since his retirement from football in 2013) Jamie Carragher has apologised after a video showed the former England and Liverpool defender spitting towards a girl in a auto from his own vehicle.

The former Liverpool defender had been covering Saturday lunchtime's match between his old club and Manchester United at Old Trafford and was on his way home when the incident occurred.

When the driver repeatedly mentioned the score, Carragher, now a Sky Sports pundit, is heard to say, "All right", before appearing to spit at the vehicle alongside his. I was goaded 3/4 times along the motorway while being filmed & lost my rag. I thought it was a Liverpool fan at first wanting an autograph at first so I stopped.

In the video, Carragher exchanges waves with the girl's dad.

"What did she do wrong?"

He will appear on Monday Night Football to cover Manchester City's game with Stoke but it is understood Sky's hierarchy will speak to him once the show has finished.

As per The Mirror, Carragher phoned the girl to apologise to her last night and acknowledged he had lost his head. I did not say anything.

The father claimed that he was "stunned" by Carragher's actions, and defended his taunting of the former Liverpool captain that triggered the disgraceful response.

Byrne and Davidson's report supplied criticism from the teenager's mother, who said she was "extremely angry and disappointed" with the 40-year-old. I said did he hit you and she said, 'He hit me in the face.' For a grown man to do that to a girl who had not done anything. He asks her: "Where did it hit you?" I could not believe what had happened. "I will apologise to the daughter".
