Bears to sign WR Allen Robinson

2018 NFL Free Agency: Updates on everything Bears

Former Jacksonville and Penn State receiver Allen Robinson is expected to sign with the Bears per Adam Schefter.

With former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy replacing John Fox as head coach and the signing of Robinson, the Bears will hope for a significant upturn in production from an offense that finished 30th in the National Football League last season.

Robinson gives the Bears a bona fide playmaking target for quarterback Mitch Trubisky and the team's goal this offseason has been to upgrade the skill position players around last year's No. 2 overall pick.

Robinson made just one catch in 2017 before suffering his torn ACL. He's not known as a down-the-field burner, but he's also a much better route runner than expected for his size. The Bears also are interested in receiver Albert Wilson.

Meredith and White suffered season-ending injuries. Needless to say, Robinson is one of the safest wide receivers you can draft from a floor standpoint. All but one of those catches and 17 or those yards came from 2014-2016 since Robinson lost 15 games after tearing his ACL after making his first reception of the year against the Texans in Houston.

The Bears are using an original-round tender on Meredith (knee), a restricted free agent, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. The reward may very well be worth the risk however as Robinson is still just 24-years-old.

Trubisky lacked a big, reliable target - or any target really - in his rookie season. He tallied more than 2,200 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns from 2015-16, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 after setting a franchise record with 14 TD grabs.

Robinson joins Pernell McPhee, Danny Trevathan and Glennon as opening splash free-agent signings for Pace. To know that he did that without anything close to a top-tier wide receiver is impressive, though it's still a relatively small sample size. Now we wait to see if Robinson can play like it.
