Marcus Rashford has insisted that he doesn't need any reassurances from Jose Mourinho, despite seemingly spending more time out of the squad than in it these days.

Rashford was the star of the show in the Red Devils' blockbuster encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool, finding the back of the net with two magnificent finishes - the first of which has drawn several comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo.

"It's a pity that the manager is Mourinho, because he's an English player and you want him to be given time", the former Crystal Palace and Ajax boss told BT Sport.

There have been questions of late regarding the future of Rashford, and whether he was getting enough opportunities to improve under Jose Mourinho's leadership, having started just one top-flight game in 2018.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has slammed former Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer for his comments regarding the Portuguese's handling of England worldwide Marcus Rashford.

"What he was saying was [it is] not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me because the most important thing for me is to win".

He opened the season as Crystal Palace boss, but was out after just four games, as his side failed to score or earn a point in any of them.

"If he was coached by Frank, he would learn how to lose because he lost every game."

Mourinho went on to defend his management of Rashford - a player who has made 40 appearances across all competitions this season and 93 in total under United's current coach.

"I try to give the best to the kid, I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the academy that was responsible for his formation. Analysing a performance for me is more than number of goals or assists, and for me I'm really happy with Marcus". He plays for United many matches, he starts some comes from the bench for others. Does he play every match from the start? No. Of course not but he is a player that we trust. "I'm really happy with Marcus".

United face Seville tomorrow in the last 16 of the Champions League with the tie finely poised after the goalless draw from the first leg in Spain last month.
