I have no doubt that Ernie will have the International Team ready to go in Melbourne, and I can not think of a more fitting captain to carry the tradition of goodwill through competition than Ernie Els.

The announcement is expected to be made on Tuesday.

Els becomes skipper after Nick Price had taken the role for the last three tournaments. After three extra holes between the two nominated players failed to break the deadlock, and with daylight fading fast, team captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to share the cup.

Woods meanwhile said his appetite to captain the United States team had been fueled by a stint as Steve Stricker's assistant in 2017.

The Presidents Cup, which began in 1994 and was patterned after the Ryder Cup to give global players from outside Europe a chance to compete, has been one-sided since the start.

Wooods has previously served as a vice captain on the 2016 Ryder Cup team and 2017 Presidents Cup team. Both Woods and Els served as captain's assistants for their respective teams in 2017.

Juncker tells MEPs the Irish border is a "European issue"
But he warned that the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic could be a major roadblock to sealing a deal. Mr Juncker was cheered by Eurosceptic MEPs as he noted the UK's departure was due on March 29th, 2019.

Woods has finished in the top 15 in each of his last two PGA Tour starts. Els had to make a 12-foot par putt on the next hole to extend the playoff. There is a fun and talented group of young players emerging from all across the globe for the International Team, and I am eager to accept the responsibility of building a victor when we face the United States at one of my favorite courses and cities in the world at Royal Melbourne.

In 1998 in Thailand, Woods rallied from an eight-shot deficit in the final round and beating Els in a playoff.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history.

Four-times major victor Els of South Africa has been a runner-up to Woods seven times in his professional playing career, including twice in the majors.

There has never been a playing captain in Presidents Cup history for the U.S. The last playing captain in Ryder Cup history was Arnold Palmer in the 1963 match at Atlanta Athletic Club.
