Gun Safety Teacher Accidentally Fires Gun, Injures Three Students

A bullet hit the ceiling of Seaside High School in Monterey County, and fragments from the shot struck one male student in the neck. The student's parents rushed him to a hospital for X-rays. Gonzales said his son came home with blood on his shirt and fragments of the bullet in his neck. "I just kept saying what on the phone".

Seaside police said they are working closely with the high school's administrators to investigate the incident.

"It's the craziest thing".

'It could have been very bad, ' Gonzales said.

He was pointing the gun at the ceiling at the time.

Alexander, also a Seaside City Council member, has been a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department for 11 years with a "positive and professional" reputation, Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW.

Alexander was placed on administrative leave from his teaching job and he was also placed on administrative leave at the Sand City Police Department. "The safety of your student is always our top priority, and we will continue to remain vigilant in our efforts to keep them safe while they are under our care", the Superintendent's Office wrote in a letter to the parents of the students. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the on-going investigation.

Alexander reportedly brought the gun into the classroom (illegal in California) and fired it on accident while checking if it was loaded.

While guns are not allowed on campus, law enforcement officials are allowed to be armed, Pridgen said. Alexander is also a police officer and Seaside mayor pro tem. He was the department's 2013 reserve officer of the year.

The incident occurred amid nation-wide debate on whether teachers should be allowed to carry firearms for the better protection of students, in the wake of Florida School shooting last month.

Gonzales said Tuesday's incident changed his views about President Donald Trump's recent proposal to arm teachers.
