Walmart to Expand Online Grocery Delivery Coast to Coast

Walmart will start delivering groceries to shoppers across the US — and it's a direct assault against Amazon

Walmart also offers a pickup service to customers who order online. Since Amazon's Whole Foods acquisition, the ecommerce giant has made an aggressive play for the grocery market - Walmart's most profitable category.

Walmart is making a major push into online grocery delivery.

Walmart charges a $9.95 fee for its grocery delivery service, and requires a minimum order of $30.

The Rockford-area Walmart stores now allow groceries to be ordered online and picked up at specially designated zones outside the store.

Ward noted that Walmart is learning from its delivery services in such countries as China and the United Kingdom. Each week, almost 270 million customers and members visit our more than 11,700 stores under 59 banners in 28 countries and eCommerce websites. Amazon is using Whole Foods to deliver fresh groceries to Prime customers in a handful of USA markets and plans to expand the service nationally in 2018. For now this includes Uber and Deliv, but the company tells us more will be added to that lineup soon.

More recently, it began working with partners like Uber to trial grocery delivery in select markets including Dallas, Denver, Orlando, Phoenix, Tampa and San Jose.

In another effort to bolster online sales, Walmart said earlier this year that it planned to accelerate its web-based grocery business by increasing the number of stores where customers can order food online and pick it up at stores. The retailer employs more than 18,000 personal shoppers that power this program with thousands more being added this year.

The company has its pickup program available at 1,200 locations across the USA and plans to extend it to about 2,200 by the end of the year, according to Ward. The chain says almost 90 percent of Americans are within 10 miles of a Walmart.

"We're going to continue to look for ways to utilize our stores and our e-commerce teams together and our businesses together because we believe long-term that's where we win as a company, is getting those two things in sync", Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs told investors during a presentation at the Raymond James Institutional Investors conference last week.

Safeway, Google Express and also offer delivery. Jet already sells groceries online in certain cities, but they ordinarily take a few days to arrive.
