Kratom - also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak - is a plant used as a dietary supplement in the form of pills, powders, capsules and tea made of ground-up leaves from the plant. Three samples sold online tested positive for salmonella earlier this month.

Nationally, the outbreak has sickened 87 people in 35 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Almost 90 people are now sick in a nationwide Salmonella outbreak linked to kratom powder, pills and tea, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.

At least two of three strains of salmonella were found in samples of kratom collected and also from ill people, the CDC said, and is advising that people not consume kratom in any form because of possible contamination.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Most people recover without medical treatment, although some may become so ill from sepsis or dehydration that they must be hospitalized. Typically, salmonella takes five to seven days to clear. However, the Food and Drug Administration is still issuing a recall related to the outbreak.

The CDC's initial announcement identified 28 people who fell sick across 20 states between October 12, 2017 and January 308. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence has linked these additional Salmonella illnesses to consuming kratom. "FDA is concerned that kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, appears to have properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse, and dependence", the agency said on its website.

The CDC said consumers who bought kratom-containing products between January 18 and February 18 can return the products for a refund. Minnesota's health department receives reports each year of 700 to 975 infections, usually from eating tainted food.

Many cases of salmonella infection aren't reported because the victims don't go to the doctor or report their illness, Buuck said.
