In an emotional farewell speech, Tillerson warns Russian Federation and snubs Trump

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks to the media at the U.S. State Department after being fired by President Donald Trump in Washington

Rand Paul Opposes Trump's Pick for CIA Director: She Seemed to 'Enjoy' Torture

He pointedly failed to thank Mr Trump or praise his policies.

Fictional communications director Toby Ziegler and press secretary CJ Cregg would be spinning in their graves - if they were real and if they were dead - at the daily disasters resulting from Donald Trump's liberal, uncensored and unfettered use of the Twittersphere. Since October 2017 Rex Tillerson's position has been rather shaky.

The failure to deliver those options is yet another reason Tillerson's tenure at the State Department had to end. Tillerson was an adviser whose advice was rarely sought and even more rarely followed. Whatever Tillerson's shortcomings, is there a danger that his departure from the State Department at this moment could destabilize the department and its diplomatic efforts? Both Pompeo and Haspel will have to go through the rigour of Senate confirmation before they can formally start working. As C.I.A. director, Pompeo was known to infuse his speeches with policy far more often than his predecessors, frequently staking out hawkish positions that will be at odds with the diplomatic corp he will now lead. On Tuesday, Trump cited his difference of opinion on Iran as a reason for Tillerson's firing stating, "When you look at the Iran deal, I think it's awful", whereas Tillerson thought "it was okay". The former Central Intelligence Agency director has underscored the need to press North Korea on President Trump's aim for denuclearization and has advocated regime change and military action over dialogue.

Despite rumors of a replacement, Tillerson still did not appear to know why he was sacked.

"During my meetings with Pompeo, I was very impressed with his abilities and experience".

He reportedly shows little interest in reading briefing documents, spends much of his time on the golf course or watching cable television - all the while disagreeing with the Washington establishment on just about everything. "We're taking the real-world actions that we think will make (it) unmistakable to Kim Jong Un that we are intent on denuclearization", Pompeo said.

The upshot is that firing Rex Tillerson and replacing him with an Iran hawk does not bode well for the longevity of the Iran nuclear deal.

Dr. James Mitchell, an Air Force veteran who got Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a senior member of al-Qaeda, to spill his secrets, sharply disputed the characterization of the "enhanced intelligence" techniques as torture.

"One of the main things to watch as he goes to the State Department, where he'll be a critical part of making and implementing U.S. policy around the world, is whether his views stay the same, or if he falls in line with the president", he said.

At the same time, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano expressed confidence "of more cooperation and collaboration with Washington with Secretary-designate Pompeo at the helm of the Department of State".

Pompeo defended the president in an interview with Fox News Sunday, especially with regard to China, which is widely blamed for the glut of steel and aluminum on the world market. Pompeo's friendly relationship with the president will serve him well initially but will be tested with each contradictory statement. Pompeo coming in and going, "No, that's all wrong"-it's definitely not in the cards".

For the most part, however, the chaos on the surface is a very good indication of even more chaos underneath. With Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process.

When it comes to the DPRK (and foreign policy in general) Tillerson's slated replacement, Pompeo, is considered to be more on the same page as the President. Then he gets to leave, and he doesn't have to field questions from reporters. If you have Google Home, just say, "Hey Google, play the Today, Explained podcast!"

But Trump wanted a loyalist, not a diplomat. And there is perhaps no Cabinet position more perilous than translating Trump for foreigners, defending his vision, and fielding the protestations of an global community that is continually scandalized by what is happening in Washington.
