The statewide average is also down 3 cents at $2.56, which is 20 cents more year-over-year. The least expensive gas is in Chattanooga, $2.26, and the Clarksville-Hopkinsville area at $2.30.

With gas prices about 10 percent higher than they were at this point a year ago, the situation may be near the point of USA economic strain, analysis found.

The states with the lowest average per-gallon gasoline prices included: Missouri ($2.27), MS ($2.27), SC ($2.28), Alabama ($2.28), Arkansas ($2.29), Texas ($2.31), Oklahoma ($2.33), Louisiana ($2.33), Tennessee ($2.34) and Wyoming ($2.36).

"Gasoline supplies took a sharp dip last week, as exports rose and refineries began to switch from summer- to winter-blend gasoline", said Mark Jenkins, spokesman at AAA in Tampa.

A federal estimate from last week showed gasoline demand across the US economy is at a point not usually seen until summer months, when more vacationers hit the road. The national average rose 1.5 cents to $2.54.
