The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, also addressed the House to bid farewell to the retiring MPs. He especially mentioned deputy chairman P.J. Kurien, saying he would be remembered for running the House smoothly even during crises and sending serious messages with a smile.

The Chairman, becoming emotional while talking about the repeated disruptions in Parliament, said that he was very hopefuland came with great expectationsas the chairman of the House.

He assured the retiring members that the doors of Parliament and PMO are always open for them, and urged them to continue sharing their thoughts on vital issues of the day. "Now they are walking into the well" and the government escapes scrutiny of their working, he said adding earlier the Opposition used to grill ministers about their ministries. The senior Congress leader said the Opposition didn't disrupt the House but raised key issues which matter to the people. Modi also thanked the Opposition parties to allow the House function to give farewell to the outgoing MPs. I would like to say thjat it is Parliamentarians and legislators who have kept Democracy alive by raising issues of concern of the poor, the backwards and the underprivileged in both Hosues, "Mr Azad said".
