"These are crimes of a monster", said Trump, adding that Bashar al-Assad's "recent attack... are a direct result of Russia's failure..."

No damage was reported on the ground in Homs, it added.

The Syrian Army said in a statement that about 110 missiles were fired by the US and its allies on Syrian military sites, damaging the Research Scientific Center in the northeast of Damascus and the military bases in Homs. Moments after Trump announced the strikes to the nation, loud explosions lit up the sky and heavy smoke filled the air in Syria's capital. Al-Alam Arabic TV displayed scenes of public gathering in support of the government in the streets of Warzah in Damascus near an attack site.

Last weekend's chemical weapons attack on the Syrian people was just the latest.

Syria's seven-year-old civil war has pitted the United States and its allies against Russian Federation, which itself intervened in the war in 2015 to back Assad.

"The aggression is a flagrant violation of global law, a breach of the worldwide community's will, and it is doomed to fail", said state news agency SANA.

General Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the strikes hit targets related to Syria's chemical weapons program - a scientific research center near Damascus, a weapons storage facility west of Homs, and a third location nearby containing a command post and an equipment storage facility.

When asked whether the British parliament should approve any possible United Kingdom intervention in Syria, Shaw said that he wonders "what possible motive could have triggered Syria to launch this chemical attack at this time in this place".

The UK, United States and France launched "precision strikes" in Syria overnight.

"Syrian means of air defense: S-125, S-200 air defense systems, Buk and Kvadrat were used in the repelling the missile strike". The attack is believed to have been ordered by the Syrian government.

On that occasion the United States attack was confined to the airbase where planes carrying the sarin and chlorine gas had taken off.

"Our warnings have been left unheard", Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said in a tweet on Saturday morning. "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.

They "are responsible for the regional consequences of this adventurist action", it said, condemning a "clear violation of global rules and laws".

Last year, the United States only waged strikes on Syria after determining that more deadly sarin gas was used and some U.S. media had reported that Washington was confident Assad had also used sarin on April 7.

But all sides know that any further escalation risks bringing the USA and Russian Federation into direct conflict, and bringing other United States allies - particularly Britain and France - into the war.
