US vice president meets Venezuelan opposition ahead of summit

Vice President Mike Pence will represent President Trump at the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, on April 13-14.

"The fact that after several summits, in this one we have a consensus document worked out by the foreign ministers is a signal of the efforts and search for common ground by us, the countries of the Americas", Vizcarra said.

The vice president announced that the United States would provide almost $16 million in humanitarian assistance to Venezuelans who have fled their country under the rule of President Nicolas Maduro.

Pence met with Julio Borges, a Venezuelan opposition lawmaker and former speaker of the National Assembly, David Smolansky, former mayor of the city of El Hatillo, Carlos Vecchio, political coordinator of the Popular Will party he co-founded with opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, and Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas.

The vice president says Maduro has turned Venezuela into a dictatorship and has brought about "abject misery". - Pence defended the president while building support among USA allies for the joint strikes with Britain and France.

His focus is on Venezuela, a country that has lost at least 1.5 million people as conditions have worsened, according to the United Nations high commissioner for refugees.

The State Department said the aid will help provide Venezuelan refugees with safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, shelter, work and education opportunities and protection from violence, in coordination with other humanitarian organizations and government partners.

The US has sanctioned Maduro and dozens of top officials, accusing the country of human rights abuses and sliding into a dictatorship. He was meeting with Venezuelan opposition leaders.

The White House said on Tuesday that Trump had made a decision to call off his trip to Peru - which would have been his first trip to Latin America as president - to focus on Syria following a suspected chemical weapons attack.

It will be Pence's second trip to the region - he travelled to Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Panama last August.

Vice President Mike Pence plans to promote the U.S.as a steady trading partner and press Latin American partners to further isolate Venezuela during his weekend trip to Peru.

Pence had been scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday night, and it was not immediately clear if he would still attend.

Pence, who filled in for Trump, spent part of the summit trying to drum up support for further isolating Venezuela, which faces mounting US sanctions.
