Barbara Bush, wife of George H.W. Bush and mother to George W. Bush, is seriously ill and has chosen to stop receiving care to prolong her life, according to a statement from her family on Sunday. She has consulted with her family and doctors and decided not to seek additional medical treatment.

Many have said she's a mighty presence, but at the same time, she and husband President George H.W. Bush are regular people.

Former first lady Barbara Bush looks on before game five of the 2017 World Series between the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Minute Maid Park on October 29, 2017, in Houston.

"I believe America is going to be better off if every family establishes a culture of service to others", Bush said. She has been treated for decades for Graves' disease, a thyroid condition. In April 2017, he was hospitalized in Houston for two weeks for a mild case of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.

Maine Governor Paul LePage posted a tweet saying in part, "Barbara Bush is one of a kind, and she has been a wonderful friend and inspiration to so many people in Maine".

Along with her husband, Bush has been accompanied by her daughter Doro and sons Marvin and Neil.

March US sales boost signals more optimism
Clothing and clothing accessory stores were up 6.1 percent year-over-year but down 0.8 percent from February seasonally adjusted. That's more than double the overall retail sales gain in the past 12 months of 4.5 percent.

She is 92 years old.

Since the news about her failing health was made public Sunday afternoon, many Houstonians have offered prayers and support. Bush donated the proceeds of the books to her charity, which is aimed to improve the lives of American families through literacy.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith - but for others", he said. The foundation partners with local programs and had awarded more than $40 million as of 2014 to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide. She was doing better and had been released earlier this past week, but started to get worse in the past couple of days.

Sons George and Jeb have visited her in the past week.

Bush also revealed her secret for a long life: medical attention.

Known for her wit and wisdom, a strong defender of family and country....we send our prayers for comfort to this attractive American woman to whom we owe many thanks.
