Kate's pregnancy was announced on September 4 previous year, after she was forced to cancel an appearance the same day due to the condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum.

A source said at the time: "Kate is in Bucklebury with the children for the Easter weekend, putting her feet up and enjoying some well-earned rest".

The Duchess of Cambridge, as Kate is officially known, was taken in the early stages of labour to the private Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in west London where their other two children, George and Charlotte, were also born.

And the following day Kensington Palace announced that the Cambridges' baby was due in April, interpreted as indicating the duchess's 12-week scan had taken place. During her pregnancy, Kate maintained a busy pace of royal engagements, including a trip with William to Norway and Sweden and the launch of a mental health program in schools.

The baby prince or princess will be a sixth great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 92 on Saturday, and her husband Prince Philip.
