The conversation took place following heavy criticism towards West's support of conservative thinker Candace Owens (best known for her vocal opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement).
Owens tweeted that she was "freaking out" over West's tweet because she repeatedly credits his musical lyrics for inspiring her work. You're not living through anything right now.
Speaking on Hot 97, Darden claimed that West told him that he felt like "nobody really showed love for me when I was addicted to opioids and in the hospital". "Black people that are focused on their past and shouting about slavery and black people that are focused on their futures", she said.
Owens, the communications director for Turning Point USA, said she believes an "ideological civil war" is happening with African-American people.

I think that's what Kanye West and myself represent to the black community, and that makes [the left] very nervous...there is no value in being a victim, there is no value in being oppressed.
Owens thanked West on FOX & Friends. "None of you white men own my blackness", she defiantly tweeted.
