The Delhi Police said two people were killed during the dust storm and 18 were injured.

The sudden change of weather in Delhi forced airport authorities to divert at least 40 domestic and worldwide flights, an official said.

An Air Vistara flight from Srinagar was diverted to Amritsar following the weather change.

The runways at IGI Airport were shut between 5:15 pm and 6:50 pm as the strong dust storm swept across Delhi, severely limiting visibility.

More than 70 incoming flights were diverted from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here on Sunday evening following a powerful dust storm and rain, officials said.

The much-needed reprieve came after a sweltering day, when the maximum temperature had reached 40.60 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal.

A met department officer said south Delhi's Safdarjung observatory recorded a wind speed of 109 kmph.

According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorms also occurred at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtara, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu today.

The upcoming thunderstorm is the result of a new western disturbance, said the IMD on Saturday.

The storm left 75 dead in UP alone and 91 injured. On Wesnesday, five people died in Etawah district, three each in Mathura, Aligarh and Agra, two in Firozabad and one each in Hathras and Kanpur Dehat.

In both cases, toppling trees fell and damaged overhead Metro wiring, an official spokesman said.

While the maximum temperature in Chandrapur shot up to 47.3 degree Celsius on Friday, mercury may hit 43 degree Celsius with heat waves spread across the National Capital region in mid of May. Fallen branches were seen blocking some roads in south Delhi areas, leading to long traffic jam.
