An officer confronted an armed 19-year-old man who opened fire at an IL high school Wednesday morning, an encounter that ended with the suspect injured and in custody.
Police Chief Steven Howell said at a news conference that the officer shot and wounded the lone gunman at Dixon High School about 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials identified the officer who stopped the shooter as Mark Dallas. He says the teenager turned and shot at the officer, who then returned fire. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
"No students or staff were injured in the incident", officials said. The suspect is in custody and is receiving medical treatment. He was placed on administrative leave, since he was involved in the shooting.

Howell, Jr., said the names of the suspect and the school resource officer are not being released yet. Thank you @DixonPoliceand DHS Staff for doing what you do best. While all Dixon public school were put on lockdown earlier in the day, only Dixon High School remains on lockdown. The agency for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded to assist.

The suspect, a former Dixon High student, left the school when the officer confronted him, and ran, Howell said.
A 19-year-old man who is a former Dixon High School student is arrested in connection with a shooting Wednesday morning at the school. "His courageous actions saved a lot of lives", said Langloss, whose daughter was among the seniors in the gym.
UPDATE 9:14 a.m.: On the Dixon High School's website they have a banner at the top of the page alerting parents they can pick up their children. Dixon Police Department created the resource officer position in 2000 to help prevent this type of occurrence.
Dixon is a central IL city about 100 miles west of Chicago.
Howell said there is no further threat to the school and police are confident the gunman acted alone.
