Welsh beaches, marinas and boat tour operators have been ranked among the best in the world.

Parents told a survey they were put off by litter-strewn beaches and pollution in the sea.

Keep Britain Tidy's chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: "When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an worldwide Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country".

Beaches in the south east to win this award are: Worthing Beach, Bognor Regis East, Littlehampton Coastguards and West Wittering.

A study by campaign group Keep Britain Tidy in May found 18 per cent of children had never set foot on a British beach, 27 per cent had never swum in the sea in this country and 33 per cent had never been on holiday to the coast.

This year environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy is presenting 190 awards, including 65 global Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (eight more than last year), with 42 beaches achieving both awards. The award goes to sites with exceptional environmental awareness and water quality.

Only 42 beaches achieved both awards - including Roker and Seaburn. Our research shows that almost two thirds (65 per cent) of parents would prefer to visit beaches with Blue Flag or Seaside Award status, so growing the number of beaches with an award is vital to encourage more families to visit our lovely coastline.

The privately owned beach at Ingoldmells has also been awarded Blue Flag status.
