Hawaii volcano erupts, spews ash 6 miles into the sky

According to the Associated Press, Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes; looking at its history, an eruption killed one person in 1924, sending ash and dust in the air for a period of 17 days.

"At any time, activity may again become more explosive, increasing the intensity of ash production and producing ballistic projectiles near the vent", the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Kilauea status page.

Halemaumau is the crater within Kilauea's summit caldera.

In a Facebook post, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency warned that the eruption's ash plume will cover the surrounding area.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has erupted from its summit, shooting a dusty plume of ash about 30,000 feet into the sky. "Shelter in place if you are in the path of the ash plume". It also caused lava flows and released volcanic gases in the residential area of Leilani Estates, preceded by numerous earthquakes and cracks on the road.

Stunning photos released Tuesday showed several people playing golf at Volcano Golf and Country Club on Hawaii's Big Island - as plumes of ash and fire filled the sky in the background.

A 4.2 magnitude natural disaster at the volcano at 8.36 a.m. prompted authorities to issue an alert reassuring rattled Big Island residents that there was no risk of a tsunami from the volcanic activity.

The powerful, steam-driven blast was expected to spew large amounts of volcanic ash and smoke from Kilauea's crater on Hawaii's Big Island. He said he did not hear anything either and is in an area that did not get any ash.

Since a new zone of Mount Kilauea began erupting nearly two weeks ago, lava has wrecked dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to be evacuated.

Officials in Hawaii say volcanic emissions from the summit at Kilauea volcano on the Big Island have decreased, prompting the cancellation of an ash fall advisory.

The US Geological Survey said the eruption took place at 05:00 local time (15:00 GMT).

Staff at the volcano observatory and the national park had previously been evacuated.

Officials at the USGS have said that they expect to publish a report on the volcano's activity soon and that the eruption occurred too early in the morning to be captured by video footage.
