Could North Carolina be site of new Apple campus?

Sources have told WRAL that negotiations with the tech giant led to the tweaks announced Thursday, including the elimination of a per-job incentives cap meant to attract higher paying jobs. The company is looking at plots of land in Northern Virginia and in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park (RTP).

According to multiple reports, Northern Virginia and North Carolina are under consideration, as the new Apple campus location. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Northern Virginia is in the running for the new location-but it may not be the only East Coast site in contention.

It would seem that the maker of the iPhone needs more space to stretch its wings, which is why Apple is thinking of building a new campus somewhere in the USA and there are two top contenders, at the moment. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in USA facilities later this year.

North Carolina was first tipped as a possible location for the new Apple campus on Tuesday.

By contrast, Amazon is said to be exploring the Research Triangle area as a contender for a second headquarters with up to 50,000 jobs. "We do not share information about economic development projects before they are final, but I will be happy to share more information if or when a decision is made", spokesman Jamal Little said in an email. Both Arizona and North Carolina are reportedly being considered by the Cupertino firm and both states are fighting to make sure that they are chosen.

In January, Apple pledged a $350 billion investment into the USA economy over the next five years, and part of that plan is the opening of a new Apple headquarters.

Apple wasn't immediately available to comment on its plans, nor was Cooper's office. The new campuses will not be anything like the previous ones.

North Carolina's incentive deal is said not to include any upfront grant money to the world's largest company.
