Won't allow anything threatening India's security: North Korea

The meeting comes soon after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited North Korea for preparatory talks ahead of the Trump-Kim Summit.

Minister of state for external affairs Gen. (retd.) V.K. Singh already began a crucial two-day visit to North Korea on Tuesday. He also highlighted the threat from nuclear proliferation, in particular India's concerns in the context of proliferation linkages with the country's neighbourhood. India has been alleging Pakistan's AQ Khan's role in helping North Korea develop its nuclear programme. "The North Korean side emphasised that as a friendly country, it will never allow any action that would create concerns for India's security", the statement said.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry says it will closely cooperate with the U.S.to direct all efforts towards achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, based on what was agreed at the recent inter-Korean summit.

It may be recalled that in October past year, India had made it clear that it will not shut its embassy in North Korea, telling the United States it must have some friendly countries that have embassies in Pyongyang so that "communication channels are open".

After the USA reached out to North Korea, in a surprise development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. (Retd.) VK Singh as his envoy to Pyongyang to open channels of communication. In 2015, North Korean foreign minister Ri Su Yong had visited New Delhi to hold talks with external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj. North Korea stated that the USA was considering its intention of denuclearising the Korean peninsula as a sign of weakness.

President Xi Jinping has expressed support for North Korea's avowed new shift to focus on economic development, along with improving relations with South Korea, during his meeting with a high-level delegation from North Korea's ruling Worker's Party.

In what could indicate more trade and interaction now between the two countries, the MEA said, "The two sides made a decision to explore possibilities of cooperation in the areas of mutual interest, including vocational education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, promotion of yoga and traditional medicines". India has time and again condemned North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

After the summit, Kim became the first North Korean leader to step into South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

Foreign Minister Spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that the parties must express sincerity, have good will and guarantee the conditions of the meeting scheduled for June between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump.
