Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and adviser, has been granted his permanent security clearance, a person briefed on the matter said on Wednesday, ending a period of uncertainty that had fueled questions about whether Mr. Kushner was in peril in the special counsel investigation.
The New York Times has confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has concluded their background check into President Donald Trump's son-in-law and policy adviser. His clearance was suspended in February, however, as the White House faced blowback over the Rob Porter scandal.
He said his client was "looking forward to continuing to do the work the president has asked him to do".
Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, was operating for more than a year with interim clearance amid concerns over his foreign contacts and financial entanglements.
White House senior adviser Jared Kushner speaks onstage during the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, on May 14. But attorney Edward MacMahon, who specializes in national security matters, suggested that the FBI would not have signed off on such a clearance if Kushner was a target of a ongoing criminal investigation. He is married to Ivanka Trump, the president's oldest daughter.
Kushner's background check took more than a year.
Kushner also reportedly met with special counsel investigators for about seven hours in mid-April.
Texas Gov.'s Campaign Cancels Shotgun Giveaway After Santa Fe School Shooting
The tight-knit community of Santa Fe is still reeling from a tragedy that many thought would never happen in their small town. More than 200 officers from a variety of agencies would eventually respond to the school, he said, thanking them.
"In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigation", Lowell said.
When Trump took office past year, Kushner was granted interim clearance which allowed him to handle classified information while his background check was ongoing.
"For that job, he would normally need top secret and SCI", Zaid said. But Kushner's troubles were compounded at least in part because his initial security clearance application didn't list dozens of foreign contacts that he later included in updated submissions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Gaining a permanent security clearance potentially relieves tremendous weight on Kushner, whose contacts with foreign officials during Trump's transition to the White House were subject to major scrutiny and damning media reports.
Some had expected Kushner might not receive a permanent clearance for the duration of Mueller's investigation.
Initially, Kushner did not list his foreign contacts on the form, though he submitted an addendum indicating he was willing to detail them.
Some experts said that the evolving disclosures might have been disqualifying for another person and that it could explain the delay in granting Kushner a clearance.
