Alberto is forecast to make landfall somewhere along the north central Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle threatening very heavy to extreme rainfall.
Friday, Governor Rick Scott met with Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford and Panama City Beach Mayor Mike Thomas to prepare for upcoming impacts from Subtropical Storm Alberto. This will likely begin Sunday afternoon and last through Tuesday, something the 4 Warn Storm Team will continue to watch.
It is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours as it heads to the Gulf of Mexico.
10 a.m. Tropical storm watches have been issued by the Mexican and Cuban governments as Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed in the northwest Caribbean Sea.
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical system that will bring heavy rain to Florida and the Gulf Coast states by Memorial Day.
Earliest reasonable arrival time of tropical storm
"Instead of having warmer temperatures throughout its core, like a tropical storm, its upper levels are still quite cool, like what you'd typically see with winter and spring low pressure systems", said Will Ulrich, a meteorologist with the Weather Service in Melbourne.
Tropical storm watches are in effect for Tulum to Cabo Catoche, Mexico, and the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.
Many times these subtropical storms transform into true tropical cyclones. This broad surface low-pressure system is battling some high wind shear and interacting with land, most of the convection associated with this system is to the east of the center. The latest rainfall predictions from the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center call for 1-3 inches of rain through next week in south Louisiana. Accuweather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski took that a step further Friday afternoon, saying, "We can not rule out the possibility of this system becoming a hurricane before it makes landfall sometime on Monday or Monday night".
The National Hurricane Center has said there's a 90 percent chance a tropical or subtropical depression or storm develops in the Gulf Coast over the weekend.
The Government of Cuba has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.
