Bashing the leader of one of America's venerable allies, the White House escalated its trade tirade and leveled more withering and unprecedented criticism Sunday against Canada's prime minister, branding Justin Trudeau a back-stabber unworthy of President Trump's time.
"State of the Union" host Jake Tapper asked Kudlow what right Trump and other US officials had to be offended by Trudeau's comments, given the dispute. He called United States tariffs on its ally under the pretext of national security "kind of insulting" and said Canada would not be "pushed around". "He did a great disservice to the whole G-7".
When Trump's tweets withdrawing support from the G7 statement hit on Saturday, the prime minister's office said Trudeau had not said anything in his closing news conference he has not said to Trump before.
"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.
"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Mr. Trudeau said. The United States' closest trading partners - the EU, Canada and Mexico - have vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs on scores of USA products beginning in the coming weeks.
Kudlow later tied Trudeau's comments to the president's upcoming Singapore summit with North Korean despot Kim Jong-Un and explained that if anything went wrong during the negotiations, it would likely be Trudeau's fault.
He described Trudeau's news conference as "sophomoric" and a "political stunt".
He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing United States tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs".
"I don't know anything about that", Kudlow said.
Germany also said it will stand by the jointly agreed communique.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", said Navarro.
Although Canada and Mexico say the idea is unworkable, Trump told reporters on Saturday that the new deal would contain such a provision.
Justin Trudeau and President Trump participate in the working session at the G7 summit on Friday.
Internationally, one European diplomat says the rest of the G7 will carry on despite the president's online attack against Trudeau and his decision to pull out of the final G7 communique. He told CNN's Jake Tapper that "of course" Trump's tweets about Trudeau actually had to do with North Korea "in large part".
The picture, taken on Saturday by German government photographer Jesco Denzel, shows a standing Mrs Merkel with her hands firmly planted on a table staring down at Mr Trump, who is seated with his arms folded and eyes glaring.
At issue now is whether the seven nations can conclude their meeting with a joint statement of priorities.
"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", it said. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't", he tweeted.
A year earlier, Bornstein said in a December 2015 letter: 'If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency'.
