High-ranking officials from both countries have met several times in advance of Tuesday's summit to prepare for the historic talks.

The newspaper described the summit as the start of a "changed era".

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said.

Pompeo had earlier tweeted a photograph at breakfast with ambassador Kim, stating the USA position was unchanged: "We remain committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

"We continue to call on North Korea to completely, verifiably, and irreversibly dismantle all of its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missiles as well as its related programs and facilities", it said.

"We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely", Trump said.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official. On Sunday, as the worldwide media swarmed Singapore and Kim arrived on a special Air China flight, just hours before Trump, there was still no word.

The meeting lasted more than two hours and took place at the Ritz Carlton.

U.S. President Donald Trump departs from the G7 summit in the Charlevoix city of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, June 9, 2018. "From what I can tell from (Trump's recent comments at the White House), they're not going to be asked to do much".

Trump had earlier tweeted about the "excitement in the air!"

Mr Kim has only publicly left his country three times since taking power after his despot father's death in late 2011 - twice traveling to China and once across his shared border with the South to the southern part of the Demilitarised Zone in recent summits with the leaders of China and South Korea respectively.

Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan shared a photo that showed him Balakrishnan welcoming Kim Jong-Un to Singapore.

The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches.

But then again, nothing about this summit is routine.

Trump and other top US officials have promised a "bright future" for the North if it quickly relinquishes its nuclear weapons - including economic inducements and a security agreement.

But the two sides reportedly have struggled to close the gap on the crucial question of North Korea's intentions on denuclearization. Kim also released a statement in September that said he will "surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire".

Led by Sung Kim, a longtime State Department diplomat who now serves as the US ambassador to the Philippines, the USA team had held at least five sessions with the Pyongyang delegation over the past two weeks at the demilitarized zone in Korea.

The running bodyguards of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - which made an appearance for the first time during the inter-Korean summit in April this year - are now back in action, this time in Singapore. Also on Air Force One, which is to arrive Sunday evening in Singapore, was White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, other officials of the National Security Council and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
