He brought three airplanes and a convoy of armored vehicles with him from Pyongyang, Time magazine reported.

"I think the minimum would be a relationship".

Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore. That evening, he said in a tweet that "great progress" was already being made and that denuclearization - "not just a freeze" - was on the table.

US President Donald Trump, left, shakes hands with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to The Istana, the official residence of the prime minister, in Singapore on June 11, 2018. He went out of his way to be cordial during two summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April and May.

"Trump will hype this relentlessly, no matter what comes of it", tweeted Robert E Kelly, a political science professor at Pusan National University in South Korea who is town to comment on the summit for the BBC.

Pompeo has disputed the notion that the president is moving the goalposts, telling reporters that Trump "has always understood that this was a process."

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said. But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the United States as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

Singh said the Trump administration would now need to develop a strategy for kindling peace talks. The Taliban has set the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces as a precondition for talks.

Officers combed the city on Sunday, from the old colonial section to the modern skyscrapers to the hotel on nearby Sentosa island where Trump and Kim will actually meet.

"It's hospitality that we would have offered them, and as Chairman Kim said yesterday, he would have liked to have come to Singapore anyway, with or without the summit", Dr. Balakrishnan told the BBC.

The first-ever meeting between a USA president and a North Korean leader was to kick off at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a handshake, an image sure to be devoured from Washington to Pyongyang and beyond.

The president's rhetoric has not mirrored that of his new secretary of state.

The meeting between Kim and Trump will mark a turnaround of relations between the two leaders after a long-running exchange of furious threats and insults.

White House officials have said Rodman will play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations.

"We could sign an agreement". Trump on Monday forecast a "nice" outcome, while Kim spent the day out of view.

"Everything that we see, say and do is based on observable, testable, referential behavior", he told FOX Business' Maria Bartiromo on "Mornings with Maria" on Monday.
