Xiaomi Redmi Y2, successor to last year's Redmi Y1, has been launched in India on Thursday at an event held in New Delhi. The poster has a large "6" in the background hinting at the launch of the Redmi 6 series of smartphones.
As far as the design is concerned, the Redmi Y2 closely resembles the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro - except for a few differences on the back. The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes at a starting price of Rs 9,999. Even though this phone has a great value compared to other brands, the phone in their own lineup will likely be a bottleneck for the sales of this device. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3GB and 32GB storage. The phone also boasts of a fingerprint sensor, selfie LED light, dual rear cameras, and a special feature.
With connectivity options such as 4G LTE with VoLTE, dual-SIM card slots, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Global Positioning System, the smartphone runs Android 8.0 Oreo OS with MIUI 9 skin on top. The screen is 5.99 in diagonal with a tall 18:9 ratio and an HD+ resolution (1440 x 720 pixels). It has a battery backup of 3080mAh and runs MIUI 9. The newest MIUI feels more polished than its previous version and comes with a gesture feature, which allows you to disable the navigation bar and use a gesture interface not very different from that of the iPhoneX.
Xiaomi is also touting the 4500k soft-toned selfie light which is supposed to simulate natural white light. The camera sensor provides support for PDAF including a wide range of camera modes on both rear and front.
Following the Redmi S2 specifications, we can expect the new smartphone to sport a 16MP front-facing sensor with AI-powered portrait mode and vertically aligned 12 MP + 5 MP sensors on the back. So, battery performance will be good enough to offer a full day usage.
Xiaomi's event for the Redmi Y2 launch is set to kick off at 3:00PM today, and you will be able to watch it live online. The device will be available in gold, rose gold and dark grey colour options. The Redmi Note 6 may become official along with the Redmi 6 on June 12, but who knows, we'll just have to wait and see. The phone is backed by a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, while there is another variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It is a dual sim smartphone which supports all required connectivities like 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS + GLONASS.
