Officer rescues toddler running on side of Illinois highway

Police Department officer was honored for rescuing a toddler running alongside a freeway last month.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino was driving on Route 59 when he saw the boy running along the right lane of the highway. "I initially thought it was a dog at large about to run into the street", Mannino said.

"Come here!" Mannino shouts as he runs and catches up to the little boy.

The officer then picked the child up, carrying him out of harm's way. Mannino then alerts dispatch that he has him and would begin searching for his parents.

No one was hurt, which the police department attributes to Mannino's "observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad auto and himself between the child and traffic".

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional". The mother was not charged as the incident was deemed an accident, the spokeman said.
