Over the best-of-five sets on clay, Nadal improved to 111-2 - it is a figure nearly as imposing as the nearby Eiffel Tower - his lone reverses coming against Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015 at the French Open.
Nadal is now the first player in the Open Era, male or female, to win the same Grand Slam tournament 11 times, a feat that has been dubbed La Undécima, after Real Madrid's bid to win an 11th European Cup. "I played a great match against a great player", said Nadal.
The Spaniard had been the hot favourite to win the second Slam of the year, after warming up with three clay-court titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome. He was playing very well I think.
But the transition from clay to grass has caused Nadal problems in the past, with injuries hampering his recent Wimbledon campaigns.
Now, Nadal's coach Carlos Moya has suggested that a strong start on Sunday against Dominic Thiem in the final would help. 'He's feeling a bit insecure maybe at the beginning and once he gets ahead in the match his confidence comes back', Moya said.
On Sunday, Thiem was right out there at Court Philippe Chatrier, too, making his initial appearance in a major final, swapping shots with that very same Nadal.
- Nadal breaks to love to clinch the opening set as Thiem undoes all of his earlier hard work with a third forehand unforced error of the game into the net. Nadal's level immediately cooled off a little, though, and Thiem worked his way back into the set as he broke back in the following service game. "Bravo. To me it's been still great two weeks". A spate of poor play quickly saw him lose the first three games of the set.

The mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena said the capital could take in "20 families up to a maximum of 100 people". Salvini to prevent the ship from mooring in Italy if passengers' lives become endangered.
Federer and Nadal haven't faced each other even once in 2018 as the Swiss star avoided the French Open due to injury.
Thiem, mixing heavy top-spin and flat groundstrokes and angling balls across the sidelines, saved a break point at 1-2 and two more at 2-3 and there were signs that Nadal was struggling with his timing as he framed several forehands.
Seemingly cruising to victory, that's when Nadal called for the trainer.
"Let me enjoy this title", Nadal said.
He displayed his lethal weapon of single-handed backhand, while being troubled by unfavorable performance on his first serves, conceding the first set 6-4.
Nadal now leads 2-0 in the second set, having won the first set 6-4.
While unpopular, Nadal's comments have resulted in more of a rekindling of an old debate rather than sparking a new one. Puerta was to later fail a drugs test and handed an eight-year ban, eventually reduced to two years.
As Ben Rohrbach of Yahoo Sports notes, men have not always been the bigger draws as Grand Slam events.
