The National Weather Service was also assessing the scene Thursday in an effort to determine if a tornado did in fact touch down, as officials at the scene said they suspected.

There were no initial reports of injuries, according to the Associated Press.

The scene along Mundy Street on Thursday morning resembled a war zone, with debris in the streets and damage to most structures.

A powerful storm struck a shopping plaza late Wednesday night while the area was under a tornado warning. The team in Bradford County had not released a preliminary report saying how strong the tornado was that touched down in Franklin Township as of Thursday afternoon.

And just across the street- near the Wyoming Valley Mall-- most businesses there dodged a major catastrophe.

Joy Frie told The (Wilkes-Barre) Citizens' Voice that staff and patrons huddled in the kitchen of the bar where she bartends until they could escape to another business.

The investigators' report from Wilkes-Barre said the tornado damage was consistent with an EF2 strength tornado, meaning the average wind speed reached between 111 and 135 miles per hour.

"The doors were busting open".

State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Wilkes-Barre, said he was working to get aide for the township through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and its state counterpart.

Bradford County also had a lot of damage from Wednesday night's storms. Township police wrote on their Facebook page that there were reports of "multiple collapsed buildings".

Scarboro said some of the rescues included at least one person in a wheelchair who needed help because of debris and older couples who were trapped in storm cellars by debris. They described cars thrown into buildings, blown out windows and scattered debris.
