FOX4 reported earlier on Friday that two Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputies were shot at about 11:30 a.m.in downtown Kansas City, Kan., not far from the courthouse and sheriff's office.

Bailiff said their own firearms could have been used against them. Kelli Bailiff. The inmate was taken in a van to a gated area behind the building, and when the inmate got out of van, he somehow overtook and shot the deputies, possibly with their own guns, Bailiff said.

The deputy who was killed was identified as Patrick Rohrer, 35, who had been with the department for seven years, officials said. Police Department said the shooting occurred in the courthouse parking lot as the deputies were transporting the suspect from the Wyandotte County jail to the court services building for a hearing.

Zeigler said both deputies were taken to KU Med Center for treatment.

Moments later, the Wyandotte County sheriff's deputies were shot by one of the inmates. Authorities say they are not searching for any other suspects at this time.

Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith has defended the officers involved in both incidents, calling the shootings "unfortunate" but insisting the cops "did what they thought was necessary".

He continued, saying, "Ruth and I will be praying for the victims and their families, as well as all our law enforcement officers and other first responders as we come together as a community to mourn this horrific tragedy".

"Sending prayers to the officers, families and Wyandotte SO", the office said.

He said the shooting suspect was critically injured in the shooting and is now in surgery. The juvenile's condition is unknown.

The Olathe Police Department, Raymore Police Department in Missouri and the Jackson County Sheriff's Officer in Missouri tweeted similar heartfelt messages.

Details of what led to the shooting have not been released.
