Deputies Theresa King and Patrick Rohrer of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office died after being shot by an inmate they were transporting from a courthouse. "It's sort of our own loss, that I hurt for the families of these other two individuals that were shot because I know how they were feeling", said Ginger Ewonus, Kelsey's mother.
The inmate was taken in a van to a gated area behind the building, and when he got out of the van, he somehow overpowered and shot the deputies, Bailiff said.
Bailiff said the investigation was now being handled by the police department in Kansas City. Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, was taken to a hospital where he later died, Kansas City police said. The two had a combined 20 years of service for the sheriff's department in Wyandotte County.
Rohrer died shortly after arriving at the hospital, while King, who initially arrived at the hospital in critical condition, died from her injuries early Saturday morning. Bailiff said she was not sure whether the suspect was shot by one of the deputies or someone else who responded to the incident.
A candlelight vigil will be held for both deputies at the city hall on Sunday, June 17 at 8:00p.m.
"This is a courthouse building, there is video". Kelli Bailiff said at the press conference.

Bailiff said the investigation into what happened is continuing, but the officers followed the established protocol for transporting inmates. No other details were released about the suspect, including his condition.
"We're saddened to hear the tragic news out of Kansas City today". There is surveillance video of the scene, Blair added.
