North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Visits China

Trump defends summit with North Korea, says US ‘got so much’

South Korea, US to suspend military drills

Kim's third trip to China since March comes as Beijing tries to strengthen its role as a mediator between the USA and North Korea, where it claims compelling security and economic interests.

"Kim Jong-un, chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) visits China from June 19 to 20", a brief announcement by state-run Xinhua news agency here said.

The report suggests that during the meeting with Xi and Chinese officials, Kim will discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and potential negotiating strategies he might adopt in meeting with the United States moving forward. "President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most risky problem".

Trump's rejection of the military drills also appeared to reflect North Korea's assertion that they are "provocative" - assertions the U.S. has for decades denied.

North Korean state media has not confirmed the trip, but Monday's Rodong Sinmun included an article noting that Kim had "sent a congratulatory letter and a floral basket to Xi Jinping ... on his birthday". Kim said in his congratulatory message to Xi that he "highly appreciated the successive meetings" with the Chinese president.

The North Korean leader is believed to have landed in the Chinese capital late Tuesday morning, with ABC News reporting that a convoy believed to be carrying Kim had been spotted in central Beijing. The two men were accompanied by their wives.

The president has strongly suggested that the meeting ensured that North Korea was no longer a threat. On previous visits by North Korean leaders, including those of Kim's father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung, the news of the visits were not announced until after the they had left the country.

Trump agreed to work with Kim toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, committed to provide the North with security guarantees and pledged to end "war games" with South Korea, which North Korea and China have long seen as provocative.

The visit comes on the same day Washington and Seoul announced that they would suspend a joint military exercise in August, a move that will likely please the Chinese.

It also reiterates China's role as a crucial ally of North Korea, which could be a crucial relationship to maintain as US President Donald Trump seeks denuclearization.

"No more nuclear testing or rockets flying all over the place, blew up launch sites". "We hope Chairman Kim Jong-un's visit will contribute to that".

During his first six years as leader, Kim did not travel outside of North Korea.

White said planning for the summer drills has stopped, but there have been no decisions made on any other military exercises with South Korea.

Last year's Ulchi Freedom Guardian went on for 11 days in August and involved about 17,500 USA troops.

Seoul's Defense Ministry said Friday that Defense Minister Song Young-moo held "deep" discussions about the drills with US Defense Secretary James Mattis in a telephone conversation Thursday evening. It applies exclusively to the August exercise Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, in which about 17,500 US troops gathered with South Korean counterparts past year in an exercise that focused heavily on computer-simulations to defend against a North Korean attack.
