Investigators say a dozen shots were fired, but feuds between criminal gangs fighting over territory have become more common in major Swedish cities in recent years.

Witnesses told the Aftonbladet newspaper that they heard what sounded like up to 20 gunshots at around 6pm in the center of the city. Witnesses on the scene have said that around 12 to 15 shots were fired. It has "significant" potential for violence, Chief of the Swedish National Police Dan Eliasson said in January, as cited by The Local.

"An 18-year-old man has died in hospital", Malmo police said in a statement, adding that four others were hospitalised.

Aftonbladet reported that the shootings took place next to a police station and that officers were on the scene immediately.

A police spokesman told AFP that the possibility of a terrorist link to the attack had been discounted. Reports said they were searching for a dark-coloured vehicle.

A shooting has happened in Malmo, Sweden.
