On Saturday, this pinnacle moment of overt shallowness and die-hard canine competition returned to us when the 9-year-old English Bulldog Zsa Zsa was crowned "World's Ugliest Dog" at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.
Some of this year's contestants had hairless bodies, others had lolling tongues.
That prediction proved true as Zsa Zsa took home the crown along with the $1,500 winner's prize for her owner, Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota.
English bulldog Zsa Zsa is held by her owner, Megan Brainard.
She fought off stiff competition from Wild Thang - a Pekingese with a shit-ton of fur - and Rascal Deux, which looks like a cross between a bat and some Poundland hair extensions.
The event is taking place on Saturday this year at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, a departure from previous years when it was held on Friday.
Brazil beat Costa Rica 2-0 in thriller; edge towards last 16
As he hid his face inside his blue Brazil shirt, he had the look of a man who wondered if he had squandered his best opportunity. And Coutinho scored in the first minute of stoppage time to give Brazil a 1-0 lead over Costa Rica in this World Cup clash.
Zsa Zsa's doting owner told The New York Times that it was the pooch's personality that scored her the trophy. Here's what our winning pup's profile had to say about her life before World's Ugliest Dog stardom.
"She has come so far and she is just so lovely in my eyes", said Brainard, who operates a dog-and-cat grooming shop.
Other contestants included a blackhead-covered Chinese Crested-Dachshund mutt, a bulldog mix with excess wrinkly skin and a Pekingese named Wild Thang.
Last year's victor was a 125-pound (57-kilogram) gentle giant named Martha - a Neopolitan Mastiff with gas and a droopy face.
The competition is now in its 30th year.
All dogs are good dogs. She picked up Zsa Zsa about four years ago as a rescue dog from Missouri puppy mill.
