So, WhatsApp for iOS is getting another update that adds a couple of new features and improvements aimed at group admins.
WhatsApp Messenger has introduced a new group messaging feature which only allows admins to send messages to a group. Group administrators are able to configure this setting by opening Group Info. "We've introduced this new setting so admins can have better tools for these use cases", WhatsApp explains.
"One way people use groups is to receive important announcements and information, including parents and teachers at schools, community centres and non-profit organisations".
Over 100 illegal immigrants drowned off Libyan coast
In recent years, Libya has become a major transit route for migrants trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean sea. The coastguard picked up 14 survivors from the boat just east of the capital, Tripoli, the official said .
The "Send Messages" feature in groups lets group administrators disable chat features in a group. If the administrator selects this setting, called "Only Admins", only they will be allowed to publish to the group - they can allow others to publish by adding them as administrators. On the surface it's a way for the Facebook-owned WhatsApp to give group admins more control, but it's also a big step towards letting users turn the app into a way of receiving announcements or breaking news. Once you have changed the permission of all participants, group members will notify with a particular message right above the message box.
WhatsApp's statement on the new feature can be read in its entirety here.
